The November 2023 (Volume 111, Issue 4) issue of Ichthyology & Herpetology, the official publication of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, includes a study conducted by a team of Au Sable researchers on the Manistee River. The study was initially funded by a grant to the Au Sable Institute in 2015 from the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. Dr. Fred Van Dyke, who served as Executive Director of Au Sable at the time, was able to lead a research team in investigating the value of using two species of sculpin (a small, flat-headed stream fish) as indicator species for habitat quality in the Manistee River. Joshua (Joey) Budi from Calvin University and Tommy Sokolowski from Wheaton College collected field data, while then-Au Sable faculty member Dr. Ben Van Ee (University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez) used their results to provide a detailed genetic analysis of two closely related sculpin species. Seth Harju, Director of Heron Ecological Analytical Services and a former colleague of Dr. Van Dyke, performed detailed quantitative analysis of the data. Dr. Brian Keas, former Au Sable DIrector of Educational Development, helped Dr. Van Dyke and the research team develop the study for publication.
