Good things grow here: Community-led Restoration proJects
The purpose of our Good Things Grow Here initiative is to engage local schools, community groups, and houses of worship in authentic ecological restoration that bridges knowledge and awareness of local conservation issues with community driven solutions. Through the Good Things Grow Here initiative, Au Sable is committed to completing 50 community-led habitat restoration projects in 5 years, installing more than 50,000 native plants in the process, and educating thousands of people about the importance of native plants and preserving biodiversity. REYS (Restoration Ecology for Young Students)
Restoration Ecology for Young Students (REYS) is a multi-lesson, field and classroom-based program that actively engages 5th – 8th grade students in authentic ecological restoration to help conserve and protect local environments. Through REYS, students gain an understanding of the complexities of ecological restoration while developing and implementing a restoration project at their school or within their watershed using native plants. REYS is a grant funded-program open to all schools in Northern Michigan. More information about REYS and how to get involved can be found here.
Sacred GroundsTM
Au Sable Institute partners with the National Wildlife Federation to administer the Sacred GroundsTM program in northern Michigan. Sacred Grounds recognizes congregations, houses of worship, and faith communities who create wildlife habitat, actively link faith practices and caring for the environment, and disseminate these practices throughout the community. Sacred Grounds is a national program open to all houses of worship of all faiths. Au Sable provides financial and technical assistance to houses of worship interested creating a native plant garden on their property or within their community. More information about Sacred Grounds and how to get involved can be found here.
