“The purpose of Lent has always been to startle us awake to the true state of our hearts and the world we’ve made. Which wakes an aching, wild hope that something new might be born of the ruin.”

Let our hearts be broken together this Lenten season. We invite you to join us in reading Wild Hope: Stories for Lent from the Vanishing. The book includes stories of animals that are groaning at the brink of extinction. For each week of Lent there are stories of four animals. In weeks one through five, the stories can be read on any days of the week. In week six, Holy Week, the reading days are specified. We will use our Facebook Group to share thoughts and reflections with each other during Lent.

There are two options for acquiring the book:

  • Order directly from the publisher by clicking here. Cost is $19.99, but you can get a 20% discount by entering “AU SABLE” as a coupon code at checkout.

  • Make a $20 donation to Au Sable and we will send you the book as a gift. Make an online donation here and put “Wild Hope” in the comments field. If you recently made a donation to Au Sable and would like the book, send Jon Terry an email and he will happily send you the book as a gift.

How to join our Facebook Group:
Visit our Facebook page here, and click on the blue button near the top of the page that says, “Visit Group.” You can request to join and within 24 hours you will be added to the group and invited to post reflections and thoughts on the readings.

A little background on Lent:
Lent is a 40-day season – a tithe of our year – that begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26, and continues through Saturday, April 11. Many people engage with this season by fasting, choosing to say no to one of God’s good gifts so that we can say yes to Him in a more intentional way. Some choose not to fast from an existing habit, and instead add a new one; perhaps adding silence, scripture reading, art-making or learning about God’s creation to their days.
