Liturgy 2
We thrive in community vs.
We must become independent of others in order to succeed
Reflection by Sarah McCormick

How does the counter liturgy appear in your own life or surroundings?

This liturgy talks about the importance of community in our Christian faith. This counter-liturgy appears in my own life because I am an introvert, and sometimes I spend too much time by myself and not enough time socializing. Laziness can play a large role in this, especially when I would much rather stay in my cozy dorm than go out into the busy world. However, I have noticed that when I take the time to get coffee with my friends, or study with them, or work out with my teammates, I feel much happier and comforted.

What habits or practices have most helped you to resist the counter-liturgy and live out the truth of the liturgy?

Some habits that have helped me spend more time with others include always saying yes when invited to events, going out of my way to invite friends to coffee or a meal, and being personable and friendly to those around me, even when I am having a bad day. I have also began hosting a Bible study with my tennis teammates so that we can bond spiritually and have deep discussions about faith.

What is something you started doing at Au Sable that you’ve carried with you into your life back home? How is that shaping you?

During my time at Au Sable, I volunteered in the greenhouse a few times and I really enjoyed the work. Since returning to Calvin University, I began volunteering at the ecosystem preserve and it has been an amazing experience. Not only have I made new friends and formed new relationships, but I have also put aside time to steward creation. This is helping to shape me by learning more about how to care for the earth and how to interact with the people God has put in my life.

How has your life of worship and understanding of God shifted as a result of practicing this liturgy?

Since returning from Au Sable, I feel I am more comfortable with having spiritual conversations with my peers. At Au Sable, we had many deep discussions about our faith, and I feel this helped me get out of my comfort zone. I am also more knowledgeable about why caring for the earth connects with our faith and I love sharing it with others.
