Opening for Research Assistant at Au Sable Institute - Summer 2013

The Au Sable Institute seeks a highly motivated and well qualified undergraduate student to join its current research effort on wetland vegetation recovery and effectiveness of herbicide treatments on Phragmites australis, an invasive grass which harms native wetland plant communities. This research is a long-term controlled field experimental evaluating the effectiveness of various kinds and levels of herbicide treatment, as well as non-treatment, on controlling the spread of this invasive wetland grass in Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan. The selected applicant will work under multiple faculty mentors, including Dr. Ken Sytsma, University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of North America's leading plant taxonomists.
The ideal applicant will possess a basic knowledge of botany with skills in plant sampling and identification techniques, experience in organization and statistical analysis of data, skill in scientific writing, physical stamina needed for extended periods of time afield, ability to interact effectively with the public as well as professional scientists and managers, and the maturity to continue working with current and future investigators in the process of manuscript preparation and submission of this work for publication. The selected applicant will be a paid employee and public representative of the Au Sable Institute, a Christian institute of environmental studies dedicated to the biblical principles of creation care, and therefore must be able to demonstrate and express an active Christian commitment in personal life as well as an understanding of such principles and their applications in conservation to public and professional audiences.
Salary: $3200 plus room and board at the Great Lakes campus of the Au Sable Institute, Mancelona, Michigan.
Period of Employment: 10 June to 16 August 2013.
