Faces of Leadership: Dr. Eugene Dunkley, Board of Trustees

Posted by lindsaybarden | Jan 30, 2017

Dr. Eugene Dunkley is the newest member of Au Sable’s Board of Trustees and comes into this role of leadership at the Institute as an Associate Professor of Biology and Dean of Diversity at Greenville University, Illinois.

Gene has been teaching at Greenville since 2001 and instructs courses in Microbiology, Cell Biology and Bioethics. With a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC, Dr. Dunkley and his family lived in Oxford, U.K. for ten years while Gene completed post-doctoral positions at Oxford University.

Joining the Board in the summer of 2016, he has attended two Board meetings and as a part of the Board of Trustees, Gene explains, “My role on the Board will be focused on how to increase the diversity of students who take Au Sable classes as well as the colleges and universities which partner with Au Sable.”

Apart from his work at Greenville and Au Sable, Gene and his wife Jennifer are ordained ministers pastoring a Free Methodist church and together also direct Agape House, an NGO based in Malawi, East Africa dedicated to the education of poor and orphaned children of the country. Gene has a heart for Malawi and through his work has witnessed the ways that climate change is impacting indigenous communities’ ability to farm sustainably and control disease. Dr. Dunkley sees Au Sable as an organization that can have a major impact on developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa and hopes to see a campus located there in the future.

“Au Sable has had a positive influence on me through engaging in the mission of extending creation care and the love of creation to more people, especially those who previously may have had very little connection with these concepts,” Dr. Dunkley. “The work of Au Sable is important to me because of the vision of Revelation 7 – God’s kingdom is diverse and we should reflect that diversity here on earth.”

Gene enjoys running in his down time, and has recently started trail running. The idea of combining the challenge of running with the beauty of the outdoors sounds just right to him!
