Faces of Leadership: Dr. Bob Zwier, Treasurer, Board of Trustees

Dr. Robert Zwier, 'Bob' as many call him, currently serves on Au Sable’s Board of Trustees as Treasurer. Joining the Board in 2015, Bob is one of the newest Trustees and brings expertise and administrative experience to his role from decades spent holding senior academic positions at Northwestern College in Iowa, Malone University in Ohio and Roberts Wesleyan College in New York.
Bob studied Political Science at Calvin College (Michigan) for his undergrad, then went on to earn a Masters and doctorate in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. As a member of the Board of Trustees, this is Bob’s closest work with the Institute, and while not formally affiliated with Au Sable prior to this role, his connections to the Au Sable community were forged years ago! During his years as a graduate student he heard Dr. Cal DeWitt (former Executive Director of the Au Sable Institute) speak about creation care, then years later, while working as Academic Vice President at Northwestern College, he hired and supervised Dr. Fred Van Dyke (current Executive Director of the Au Sable Institute) as a professor of Biology.
As Treasurer of the Board, Dr. Zwier is one of four officers of the Executive Committee and is the Chair of the Finance Committee which monitors the budget process of the Institute. “As an academic leader, I have long been interested in how teachers can maximize student learning through their pedagogy. It is clear to me that the kind of educational experience offered at Au Sable has a transformative and long-lasting impact on students,” shared Bob.
Dr. Zwier is a respected Christian political scientist, teacher, scholar and administrator and in his professional career has taught as a professor at a state university in Kansas, then Northwestern College where he taught courses in politics and public policy. He then went on to work as Provost and Senior Vice President of Roberts Wesleyan College, Provost of Malone University, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Colorado Christian University and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Northwestern College. “As a political scientist, I have been learning, teaching, and writing about the relationships between faith and politics, often focusing on how the Bible shapes our views about political and public policy issues. For several years I taught a class on public policy, in which we talked about environmental policies. The writings of people who were connected with Au Sable (Dr. Cal DeWitt, Dr. Dave Mahan, and Dr. Fred Van Dyke) were influential in helping me to understand the political choices being debated in the public square,” said Dr. Zwier.
Now retired from his work at Christian colleges, Bob and his wife Janet live in Westerville, Ohio where he serves as an elder at his church and volunteer for the Red Cross delivering blood to regional hospitals and installing smoke alarms in low-income neighborhoods to reduce fire fatalities. Bob and Janet have two sons, one a meteorologist, and the other a graduate student. In his leisure time, Bob enjoys reading, disc golf, and traveling, in particular, his family has made a point of touring state capitol buildings in over 40 states!
