Pacific Rim Institute for Environmental Stewardship
Home of Au Sable-Pacific Rim
Pacific Rim Institute for Environmental Stewardship (PRI) is a faith-based nonprofit organization committed to transforming individuals and our culture toward more sustainable living. Located on Whidbey Island in Washington’s Puget Sound just northwest of Seattle, PRI has access to all the ecosystems of the northwest to facilitate studies in marine biology, sustainable agriculture, environmental health, global development, alpine ecology and more.
PRI’s campus encompasses both prairie and forest ecosystems. The prairie ecosystem found west of the Cascade Mountains in Washington and Oregon is considered among the most endangered natural systems in the United States due to its limited historical range and precarious current status. Less than 3% of the original 250,000 prairie acres remain in good ecological condition.
In addition to partnering with Au Sable Institute to provide field-based college courses, PRI leads and participates in:
- Preservation and restoration of the northwest prairie and related systems
- Research of best practices for large-scale prairie restoration
- Environmental education for students of all ages
- Service to the community in the form of facilities, trails, and other partnerships and programs
