Biography/Interests
After two years in the United States Army (1953-1955), I spent thirty-seven years-- very rewarding years-- teaching high school English. Though I taught all grades at one time or another, my work was primarily with high school juniors, teaching all the honors classes as well as regular classes. I also taught college preparatory composition classes. Since my retirement in 1992, I suppose I have fallen into a more or less typical retiree lifestyle. Mae and I spend quite a bit of time with our children and grandchildren, who happily live close-by. We have been very active in our church all of our lives and continue to be. Mae still teaches; I am an elder emeritus. We like to entertain (maybe even "angels unawares"), especially in the spirit of Hebrews 13:2. Au Sable has been an interest of mine for some forty-three years and continues to be. "Interest" is probably an understatement: Au Sable has really been my alter vocation. For the first fifteen years or so of my involvement when Au Sable was a summer youth camp and college field station, I was involved in the day-to-day operation every summer, overseeing the food service, managing the finances, doing maintenance, building buildings, assisting with the programs. My business manager duties were year-round. As Au Sable evolved in the Institute it now is, my role narrowed to that of business manager, a position which I held until December 31, 2000. I have also was a board member all of these years as well until my recent transition to board member emeritus.
